Lanterns
Lanterns have been a primary outdoor light source for
centuries. While the modern lantern has evolved from the
basic candle or animal oil lamp, lanterns remain an
important light source for all outdoorsmen. The two most
common lanterns used for camping and hunting today are
battery powered lanterns and fuel powered lanterns. You

Battery Powered Lanterns
Battery powered lanterns are the safest type of
lantern available. These can be used for indoor lighting
or used inside tents without worry of harmful fumes or

Fuel Powered Lanterns

safe for outdoor use only. Several fuel lanterns can be
adjusted to emit a brighter or dimmer light. The main
fuel sources for lanterns are propane and liquid fuel,
including kerosene. Propane lanterns are convenient
because there is no need to pour fuel, which eliminates
the worry of spilling flammable liquids. Kerosene
lanterns require the fuel to be poured into a small gas
tank and then pumped to pressurize the tank. Fuel
lanterns use mantles, small woven fabric bags that
attach to the burners and produce the illumination.
Lanterns can be single or double mantle models, with the
double mantle models burning brighter.
Flashlights
Flashlights vary in size from small pocket sized task
lights to larger models like the popular Maglite 4 Cell
flashlight. Like battery-powered lanterns, flashlights
contain either a traditional bulb, or LED lights. You
