Water Treatment and Transport
As we all know, staying hydrated especially when performing strenuous activities in harsh weather conditions is very important. However, this is not always as easy as turning on a faucet and receiving clean, safe drinking water. When hiking and camping in remote areas, you generally have three main options when it comes to finding safe drinking water. The first option is to use water filters or purifiers to remove sediment, chemicals and bacterial from the water. Another choice is the use of chemical water treatment to kill dangerous viruses and obtain safe drinking water. Finally, you may be able to bring clean drinking water with you on short hikes and camping trips.
Water Filters and Purifiers
Water filters will remove most of the sediment, chemicals, and bacteria from your water. Therefore, in most hiking areas around the United States, a good water filter will be sufficient for obtaining clean water. These filters act as a vacuum and suck water up through the filter then expel clean water out into a water bladder or other container.
As filters remove particles from the water, they can over time, become clogged. Therefore, you will need to clean the filter on your water purifier occasionally. Using a water purifier in particularity muddy water will require you to clean the filter more often. In addition, this extra wear can shorten the lifespan of your pump. Therefore, you may need to buy replacement parts and additional accessories for your filter if it is often used to filter extremely dirty water. We sell a variety of replacement parts for popular water filters including Katadyn and SteriPEN water filters, purifiers and accessories.
It is recommended that you use the best possible water source available when pumping water through a water purifier. This means a source with less sediment from a still pond where dangerous chemicals have likely settled to the bottom. A tip to protect your water purifier during use in especially muddy water is to wrap a coffee filter or bandana around the intake prefilter and secure it with a rubber band.
Chemical Water Treatment
Water filters and purifiers will, in most cases, produce clean drinking water. However, since water filters do not remove tiny viruses from the water, you cannot be completely sure. Viruses enter water systems through run off from human and animal waste and are becoming more common in high-use camping areas. Chlorine-based treatment chemicals will kill any viruses, which may be found living in your water source. Therefore, it is recommended that in order to obtain the cleanest and safest water quality, you use a combination of filtration and chemical water treatment.
The addition of a chemical purification tablet to your water after filtration will ensure that harmful viruses have been killed. We sell chemical water treatment tablets from Katadyn and Coghlan, both trusted brands in the water purification business.
